Answer-engine optimization for CPG brands: what the evidence supports

AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google are changing how shoppers discover products. Here's what actually influences whether your brand gets cited, and which AEO promises to ignore.

AEOSEO

Shoppers increasingly ask an AI assistant before they search. For consumer brands, that raises a new question: when someone asks ChatGPT for the best magnesium supplement or a fragrance-free moisturizer, does your brand come up?

A new industry of “AEO” (answer-engine optimization) tools and agencies has grown up around that question. Some of what they sell is grounded in evidence. Some isn’t.

What the evidence supports

1. Let the crawlers in. Answer engines can only cite what they can read. OpenAI, for example, uses separate crawlers for search (OAI-SearchBot), training (GPTBot) and user-requested fetches (ChatGPT-User); blocking the search crawler keeps a site out of ChatGPT’s search answers. (OpenAI) Check your robots.txt and any bot-blocking settings at your CDN.

2. Earn mentions on other sites. In an Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with visibility in Google’s AI Overviews, ahead of backlinks and domain rating. (Ahrefs) University of Toronto researchers likewise report that AI search leans heavily on earned media over brand-owned content. (Chen et al.) Reviews, press, expert roundups and genuine community presence matter more than anything you publish yourself.

3. Write clear, answer-first pages. Plain explanations, specific facts, structured product information and accurate feeds help both search engines and answer engines understand what you sell. Google says no special AI files or markup are required to appear in its AI features. (Google Search Central)

What to be skeptical of

  • “We’ll rank you #1 in ChatGPT.” AI recommendations change with nearly every query; one study found the brand lists differed on almost every repeated run. (Search Engine Journal on SparkToro) Measure your share of answers across many prompts over time, not a single “rank.”
  • llms.txt as a lever. An SE Ranking study of about 300,000 domains found no measurable effect on AI citations. (Search Engine Journal) It’s cheap to publish, but don’t pay for it.

Why it matters for search traffic too

Ahrefs found that when an AI Overview appears, the top-ranking page gets far fewer clicks than it used to. (Ahrefs) Being the source the AI cites is becoming as important as ranking first.

A practical checklist

  1. Confirm answer-engine crawlers can reach your site and product pages.
  2. Publish answer-first content for the questions your customers actually ask, in each market’s language.
  3. Keep product data accurate everywhere it appears: your site, marketplaces and feeds.
  4. Invest in earned mentions: reviews, press and expert content.
  5. Track citation share across several engines and many prompts, monthly.
