What "agentic AI" really does for a consumer brand in 2026

Most marketing "agents" are workflows with a person approving the important steps. Here's what AI agents do well for CPG brands today, where they fail, and how to judge a partner that uses them.

AI marketingAgents

“Agentic” is the most overused word in marketing technology this year. Gartner expects over 40% of agentic AI projects to be canceled by the end of 2027, and estimates that only about 130 of the thousands of vendors claiming agentic capabilities are the real thing; it calls the rest “agent washing.” (Gartner)

So what does an agent actually do, and what should a consumer brand expect from one?

Agents versus workflows

Anthropic draws a useful line: workflows follow predefined steps that call AI models along the way, while agents decide their own steps and tool use to reach a goal. Its advice is to use the simplest pattern that works. (Anthropic)

In marketing, most production systems that work are closer to workflows with clear approval steps than to free-roaming autonomous agents. That isn’t a weakness. For a brand that sells supplements or cosmetics, an autonomous system that invents a health claim is a legal problem, not a productivity gain.

What agents do well today

  • Research at volume. Reading thousands of reviews, forum threads and search queries in several languages, and clustering what customers say about a problem.
  • First-pass compliance checks. Comparing a formula’s ingredients and doses, or a draft claim, against a market’s rulebook, and flagging what needs a specialist.
  • Variants and translations. Producing many versions of an approved ad, product description or landing page, in each market’s language and format.
  • Monitoring. Watching listings, policies and prices for changes, and raising exceptions.

Where they fail

  • Brand voice drift. Without research grounding and review, AI copy converges on the same bland register for every brand.
  • Trust-heavy creative. Shoppers say they trust ads less when they believe they’re AI-made, and many say they’re less likely to buy. (Marketing Brew on the Harris Poll) AI faces endorsing a face cream are a fast way to lose credibility.
  • Judgement calls with legal weight. Whether a claim is defensible in a given market is a decision for a specialist, informed by the agent’s research, not made by it.

How to judge a partner that says it uses agents

Ask four questions:

  1. Which jobs do the agents do, specifically? “Agents that check every claim against the market’s approved list” is an answer. “AI teammates that supercharge growth” is not.
  2. Who approves what ships? You should be able to name the person.
  3. What happens when the agent is unsure? Good systems route uncertainty to a human and log the decision.
  4. Who owns the outputs? Research, creative and data made for your brand should be yours.

At Brandgentic, agents do the volume work across our platform: research, compliance checks, creative and forecasting. Named specialists approve what ships. It’s how we build our own brands, and the brands we co-own with founders. See the platform.
